There is autism, and there is the autism spectrum of diseases. They all have similar symptoms, but occasional ones that characterize one from the other. However, you don't want to mistake them so that you don't start to administer the wrong treatment for your autistic youngster inadvertently.
The following are just a few of the very clear symptoms that distinguish classic autism from Asperger's and Rett's syndromes, Childhood Developmental Disorder (CDD), and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS). They are too closely related in the autism spectrum for you to not be able to tell autism from them.
1. Autistic children sometimes appear as though they are deaf because they don't respond to you or other people around them that are calling their names or making gestures. However, they may respond very aggressively to some specific sound, event or occurrence if it is one that they cannot tolerate too well.
2. Autistic children often have a notable delay in acquiring speech and communication skills. As a matter of fact, in a few severe cases, some children with autism never learn to speak at all, and others when they do learn, may tend to speak back to you the exact same thing you have spoken to them... the way some parrots do.
3. Nonverbal skills may not come easily to an autistic child. Aside from the fact that they don't speak in a hurry, they may also never learn to understand or make gestures of their own, which can be rather frustrating. Added to that, you will likely have trouble making eye contact with them, the way a Cheshire cat would be sometimes.
